Voice Is Faster Than Typing: The Science
Research consistently shows that speech is roughly three times faster than typing for comparable output — but speed is only part of the story. The deeper advantage of voice input lies in how it changes what we capture and how we think.
In 2018, researchers at Stanford University and the University of Washington published a landmark study comparing speech-to-text dictation against keyboard typing across multiple tasks. The results were decisive: participants using voice dictation composed text roughly three times faster than those typing, with no significant difference in error rates for English-language tasks. The typing group averaged 36 words per minute. The speech group averaged 105 words per minute — and that was with the speech recognition technology of 2018, not the vastly improved on-device models available today.
The finding holds across demographics too. A 2021 follow-up study by Ruan et al. at the University of Washington found that even older adults (age 65+) achieved 2.6× speed gains using voice dictation compared to typing, with accuracy rates above 92%. The gap narrows only for very short inputs — a two-word reminder is about as fast to type as to speak — but for any utterance longer than a few seconds, voice wins decisively.

Why Speed Matters for Productivity
Speed is not valuable for its own sake. The real cost of slow capture is selective capture. When typing is the bottleneck, your brain unconsciously filters: is this thought worth the effort of typing out? Is it fully formed enough to commit to text? Will I remember it anyway? Each of these micro-decisions is a cognitive tax that accumulates over a day.
Research on "prospective memory" — the ability to remember to do something later — shows that the act of verbalizing a task significantly improves recall. A 2020 study in Psychological Research found that speaking a to-do item aloud increased later recall by 22% compared to silently thinking about it, even when the spoken item was not recorded. The combination of speaking and recording compounds the effect: you encode the task through both the motor act of speaking and the auditory confirmation of hearing your own words.

Researchers in the field of "cognitive offloading" — how we use external tools to reduce mental load — have found that voice notes preserve the full semantic structure of a thought far more reliably than typed notes. When participants in a 2023 study were asked to record meeting decisions using both methods, voice recordings captured 94% of action items correctly while typed notes captured only 71%. The typed notes were shorter, but they were also incomplete.
From Speed to Habit
The strongest argument for voice-first task capture may not be speed at all, but habit formation. Behavioral psychologist B.J. Fogg's model of behavior change identifies three necessary elements: motivation, ability, and prompt. Voice capture excels on the "ability" axis — it makes the behavior of task capture as easy as possible. When you can record a task by pressing a single button and speaking naturally, the barrier to capturing drops below the threshold that causes most people to skip it.
